DEER PARK, NY — Madison Ave Construction, a New York State licensed general contractor serving Long Island and New York City since 1989, partnered with the Act of Valor Foundation this past weekend to rebuild the basement-access stairwell at American Legion Wilson Ritch Post 432 in Port Jefferson. The company donated the labor and materials to construct a new overhead canopy over the stairwell — keeping rainwater out of the building's basement — and worked alongside student volunteers from the foundation's Youths Helping Heroes at Home program.
On behalf of the Act of Valor Foundation and our Youths Helping Heroes at Home program, I want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding work your team contributed during our project at the American Legion in Port Jefferson.
Your leadership in transforming the basement access stairwell was remarkable. From Friday's site preparation, anchoring, and pillar installation to Saturday's roof framing, roofing, and the addition of all safety fencing and railings, your team demonstrated exceptional skill, efficiency, and dedication. The final touches you completed brought the entire structure together beautifully and safely.
Your commitment not only improved the functionality and safety of the American Legion facility but also created a powerful learning experience for the middle and high school students in our Youths Helping Heroes at Home program. Our program teaches them about sacrifice, courage, and service while they earn their volunteer hours. Thanks to partners like Madison Avenue, these young volunteers get to witness firsthand what it looks like when a community comes together to honor those who served. Your contribution not only improved the American Legion facility but also helped shape the experience and understanding of the next generation.
Thank you for your generosity, professionalism, and continued support of our mission. We are truly grateful to have Madison Avenue Construction as a partner in honoring and supporting our veterans.
The post's open exterior stairwell had been allowing rainwater to collect against the basement doors during storms, creating an ongoing risk of water intrusion. As a restoration contractor, Madison Ave Construction regularly sees how unchecked water entry leads to moisture damage, mold, and costly structural repairs. Rather than treat the symptoms after the fact, the company volunteered to solve the problem at its source.
What the Crew Built
The work spanned two days. On Friday, the team handled site preparation, anchoring, and pillar installation. On Saturday, they moved on to roof framing and roofing, then added all of the safety fencing and railings before completing the final touches. The result is a new overhead canopy — set on solid, anchored pillars and properly pitched — that keeps rain off the stairwell and directs it clear of the basement entry, protecting the lower level for years to come.
Alongside the crew, student volunteers from the foundation's Youths Helping Heroes at Home program took part in the build — earning volunteer hours while learning firsthand about service and giving back to those who served. Madison Ave Construction approached the donated work with the same standards and craftsmanship it brings to its paying projects.
A Charitable Contribution
The entire project — both materials and labor — was donated by Madison Ave Construction at no cost to the post. The effort reflects the company's ongoing commitment to giving back to the Long Island communities it serves, and to supporting the veterans and service organizations that anchor those communities.
