What to Expect During Mold Treatment Services in Huntington, NY

Mold is a fungus, and while in nature it’s beneficial, as it aids in decomposition, when it grows indoors, it can be quite problematic. Mold feeds on the surfaces that it grows on, and can leave serious damage in its wake, and it releases spores into the air, which can cause adverse health effects.

In order to mitigate the dangers that mold can cause, contacting a Huntington, NY mold removal company as soon as you suspect it’s growing in your Suffolk County home is imperative. But if you’ve never had mold treatment services before, you may be wondering what to expect.

To help you prepare, the following is an overview of what mold treatment entails.

Preparations

Mold is a potentially hazardous material, so to protect your Suffolk County home – and themselves – a Huntington, NY mold removal company will make the necessary preparations. The technicians will suit up in protective gear, and they’ll don goggles and respirators. To isolate and minimize the risk of cross-contamination, they’ll erect containment around and will run hoses through the affected area.

Removal and Disposal of Items

Once the technicians and your Suffolk County home is protected, professionals at a Huntington, NY mold removal company will begin removing and disposing of items. Typically, this includes porous items that have been affected by mold growth, such as plaster, drywall, carpeting, rugs, and other upholstered items.

Bagging

Another crucial part of the mold treatment process is the bagging of items. Anything that has been removed from your Suffolk County home will be placed in thick, air-tight bags that are made of thick, durable plastic. To remove any mold, the technicians will wipe down the bags.

Spraying

Next, the Huntington, NY mold removal technicians will spray the affected area with a substance known as biocide. A liquid that kills mold, biocide is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). After the substance has been sprayed, the technicians will depart, leaving the biocide to kill the mold spores in your Suffolk County home, and to dry.

The amount of time it will take for the substances to work varies and depends on several factors, such as the extent of the damage, the materials that have been affected, and the amount of biocide that was applied.

Encapsulation

Once the biocide has fully dried, the mold treatment technicians will spray the affected area with a special kind of paint, which will encapsulate, or cover, any remaining mold spores. To prevent future mold growth, a reputable Huntington, NY mold removal company will spray the paint far beyond the affected area; for instance, if mold is growing in just part of your crawl space, it’s likely that the entire space will be sprayed down.

Inspection

Following encapsulation, the technicians will perform a thorough inspection of your Suffolk County property. During this phase of the mold treatment process, the crew will check to see if their work or if any additional treatment is needed. If there is no more visible mold and if the odor of mold is no longer present in the affected area, the treatment will likely be deemed complete; if, however, mold is detected, further steps will need to be taken.

Some information about Huntington, NY

The Town of Huntington is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Founded in 1653, it is located on the north shore of Long Island in northwestern Suffolk County, with Long Island Sound to its north and Nassau County adjacent to the west. Huntington is part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States census, the town population was 203,264.

In 1653, three men from Oyster Bay, Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams and Daniel Whitehead, purchased a parcel of land from the Matinecock tribe. This parcel has since come to be known as the ‘First Purchase’ and included land bordered by Cold Spring Harbor on the west, Northport Harbor on the east, what is now known as Old Country Road to the south and Long Island Sound to the north. The three men immediately turned the land over to the settlers who had already been living there.

From that initial settlement, Huntington grew over subsequent years to include all of the land presently comprising the modern Towns of Huntington and Babylon. The southern part of the town was formally separated to create Babylon in 1872.

Because Huntington was populated largely by English settlers, unlike the rest of the New Amsterdam colony, the town voted in 1660 to become part of the Connecticut colony rather than remain under the authority of New Amsterdam. It was not until the British gained control of New Amsterdam in 1664 (renaming it New York) that Huntington was formally restored to the jurisdiction of New York.
